Abstract | The author demonstrates that, contrary to popular assumptions, Kublai Khan did not divide the areas inhabited by Tibetans into three regions at the start of the Yuan dynasty. Rather, he planned to place Dbus-gtsang under Sakya administration and other areas under a single Tubo Pacification Commission and Chief Military Command in Hezhou. The author then details the founding of the Mdo smad Pacification Commission(in 1269); in Utsang the combined Pacification Commission and Chief military Command for the Three Routes of Utsang and Ngari Korsum; in 1325 the Mdo kham Combined Pacification Commission and Chief Military Command for Tubo and Other Routes; and the subsequent renaming of the Hezhou office to \"The Pacification Commission and Chief Military Command for Tubo and Other Regions.\" |
