Notes | This story originates from Turkey. Most likely, the author is Nasrettin Hoca, who is the hero and teller of innumerable humorous and didactical short tales in Turkey. The storyteller is often depicted being accompanied by his donkey; and the donkey frequently plays an important role in the tale. The spelling of the author's name before Turkish language reforms in the 1930s was Nasreddin Hoca.
